The LGBT Community and Broadway

Before most of America began to accept the rights of the LGBT community, Broadway supported equality for the many who performed on stage daily.

Mike Pence was the first governor to implement anti-gay laws in the United States. Under the falsehood of religious belief, he revealed his homophobia. He opposes same-sex marriage, and all equality for openly gay Americans.

When Pence made the decision to attend a performance of “Hamilton,” he certainly knew that he would not be welcomed by the cast or patrons attending the show. When he was denounced by the crowd, he accepted the boos. The truth is that the crowd’s displeasure was also aimed at Trump. He will never be accepted as the leader of our nation.

The man who has displayed the weakest temperament in political history, demanded an apology for Pence; that will never happen.

Broadway, and “Frozen” star, Idina Menzel, echoed the cast of Hamilton in a statement of support.

“It’s the right place and it’s beautiful and that’s what theater’s all about: It’s about being thought-provoking,” Menzel said Sunday on her way into the American Music Awards, where she was set to take the stage as a presenter. “And it’s just unfortunate that someone who’s going to be our president doesn’t embrace that as a freedom of speech and the arts, and sort of celebrate that moment… I’m really proud of all my friends in Hamilton and I thought it took a lot of courage.”

Trump must prepare himself for a barrage of protests at every venue he attends. No real American can accept a man who lacks morals, and is an alleged sexual predator as our president. We, the people, are the United States of America; not our government. We decide who deserves our respect and our loyalty. We must refuse the insistence of our government and the media that Trump deserves a chance. We oppose his proposals, but that is not the primary reason for rejecting him as our president. No man as vile as Trump can be allowed to demand support from the majority.

Trump will never have support from any American who is not white or heterosexual. He stands for everything which makes America less than a great nation. I believe that the most important word in the English language is ‘respect.’ Without respect, no man or woman can expect to receive another individual’s allegiance.
