President Obama inherited one of greatest financial difficulties in our nation’s history. A Republican president left him with trillions of dollars in deficit caused by the invasion of two sovereign nations, and removing regulations from Wall Street which together created a near depression. But Bush isn’t the only Republican whose failed fiscal policies have harmed the nation’s economy, and caused distress for working families.
President Ronald Reagan left office in January of 1989. George H.W. Bush inherited a trillion dollar deficit, and an unemployment rate of ten percent. Most of this was the result of Reagan’s “trickle-down,” or ‘supply side’ economics.
George H.W. Bush was unable to repair the situation for two reasons. He continued Reagan’s economic policy, and refused to raise taxes until near the end of his first and only term in office.
When Bill Clinton won the presidency in 1992, his policies reversed the problems created by his two predecessors. When Bush 43 was elected in 2000, he inherited a surplus, and a low unemployment rate.
However, Bush placed into effect Reagan’s failed trickle-down economic program. Add to that the wars and an unregulated banking industry, and President Obama faced the great recession of 2008.
Trump is our illegitimate president, but I’m not sure he is a Republican. The only evidence that he might be is that once again he is instituting a form of trickle-down economics, and is seeking the removal of regulations placed on Wall Street by Mr. Obama.
Trump is also displaying intentions to throw money away on a project which is both unnecessary, and will prove to be ineffective. He continues to seek funding for his great wall between Mexico and the United States.
Trump will gut the Affordable Care Act, costing thousands of Americans their lives; attempt to repeal all social programs; and give the one-percent additional tax breaks.
He believes he has a solution to make Mexico pay for his wall, but it will damage both nation’s economies.
Trump seeks a “border adjustment tax” on imports from our neighbor to the south. This would raise prices for consumers in the United States.
In a somewhat satirical tweet, South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham states: “Simply put, any policy proposal which drives up costs of Corona, tequila, or margaritas is a big-time bad idea,” Sen. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) said in a tweet. “Mucho Sad.”
“This is a source of very heated debate, even within the conservative community,” said Stephen Moore of the Heritage Foundation, a proponent of the border adjustment tax who advised Trump during his campaign. “It’s not going anywhere if you can’t at least rally Republicans around it.”
This idea falls under the heading of “there’s no cure for stupid.” Trump’s rash actions prove that he lacks sufficient intellect to live in America’s White House.
How much money will Trump throw away? If it was his personal wealth, he wouldn’t spend a dime; he’s “frugal.” But when it’s taxpayers who foot the bill, he has no concerns.
