When comic Bill Maher announced that he would allow right wing extremist and ‘hate monger’ Milo Yiannopoulos on his HBO show, ‘Real Time with Bill Maher,’ I was disappointed. Although free speech is the issue I feel most strongly about, hate speech is not considered free speech by me. The ‘Trump effect’ has proven that hatred results in violence and increased division within the American people.
Appearing on his Friday evening broadcast, Yiannopoulos made a fool of the aging comic. Maher allowed the brash and annoying white supremacist and bigot to state his sordid views, often without response.
This ‘Breitbart’ representative, and member of ‘Alt-Right,’ is Steve Bannon in drag. Although he admits his homosexuality, he demeans transsexuals and other ‘deviants.’ When Maher asked him about being gay, but refuses to hire members of the LGBT community, this was his response.
“Oh, no! You can’t trust them to show up to work on time. Too much drugs, too much sex, they’re always making excuses,” said Yiannopoulos, to a chorus of boos from the crowd. He then turned to the audience and quipped: “I’m just kidding. You’re easy. You’re very easy. Very easily triggered. It’s pathetic.”
Maher had no response.
Later in the discussion:
“Let’s talk about your humor,” said an extraordinarily accommodating Maher, “because I think a lot of people do miss your humor. And I’m a guy who always defends jokes, right up to the point where they pointlessly hurt people.”
“No, I hurt people for a reason,” replied Yiannopoulos. “For sure. No, I like to think of myself as a virtuous troll.”
Once again, Maher had nothing to say.
I fail to understand the purpose of having such a deviant on his show. I have watched Maher discredit numerous conservatives for their failure to be genuine and offer intelligent arguments. He has justly criticized their hypocritical faux-religious claims, and forced them to admit their lies. Yiannopoulos served no purpose, with the exception of creating an audience filled with anger and disgust; there was no point to the show, unless it was to raise his ratings. He acted like the mainstream media who encourages sensationalism to sell advertising.
Listening to Yiannopoulos is like watching old films of Stalin or Hitler. His venomous rhetoric is nothing more than an attempt to create more hate in our nation. We have enough of that with your illegitimate president.
Please Bill; in my humble opinion; don’t do that again. It was demeaning to listen to such a vile excuse for a human being. I admit that I did not watch to your entire show. When I could take no more from this “young puke,” I watched Netflix.
