I was reading an article in ‘The Week,’ by Daniel McCarthy; I will include a link to the whole article for your inspection. Its basic premise is that Trump and today’s Republican Party is similar to Richard Nixon’s, and far from what they would like to be, Ronald Reagan’s. Basically, I agree.
Like Nixon, Trump is not a conservative in his political beliefs. His plans for a wall and other extravagant expenditures make him appear more of a pragmatist. He, himself has spent more than $30 million taxpayer dollars to maintain his luxurious lifestyle.
Like Nixon, Trump is more of an autocrat than a president. He acts like the ‘schoolyard bully,’ and moves to fits of rage when his ego is not soothed.
Trump exceeds Nixon and his administration in lies and corruption by a large margin. However, they both used illegal tactics in their efforts to become elected.
Other similarities are there, but while Nixon succeeded in important areas protecting the future of our nation, Trump’s policies, and those of his party, are entirely destructive, and will move our nation backwards into a dark place.
Trump is a failure regarding international relations. Our tenuous relationship with China is the result of a trip Nixon made to Beijing in 1972. Prior to his excursion, no dialogue was possible between the two nations.
Trump has aligned himself with despots such as Erdogan, Putin, Duterte, and Kim Jong-un.
The Environmental Protection Agency began on January 2, 1970. President Nixon saw the need to curtail the dangers of growing pollution within our nation and around the world.
Trump is making a concerted effort to destroy the agency created by his Republican predecessor.
Although Mr. McCarthy is correct when he states that today’s GOP does not compare to Reagan’s under examination, I believe that Trump and his ‘Republicans in name only are far more despicable and immoral than Nixon could have imagined.
‘Watergate’ was unforgivable, and Nixon paid for it. But Trump’s collusion with Vladimir Putin is an act of treason. Trump has no principles; and his only god is money.
Reagan was the right choice in 1980, and the wrong choice in 1984. Nixon was the right choice in 1968, and the wrong choice in 1972. Trump was the wrong choice in 2016, and remains the wrong choice.
