Of course it was no surprise when Trump returned from his all too short trip when he boasted about his achievements. He also claimed how much work it was. Really. Sadly our allies didn’t quite see it that way. He made far more enemies than friends, and that is the only thing which is important.
In a recent speech, Angela Merkel expressed doubts that the European Union could trust or rely on the United States with Trump in charge. She also expressed concerns about Great Britain’s intentions as she stated that “the times in which we can fully count on others are somewhat over, as I have experienced in the past few days.”
This comes as no surprise. The NATO meetings and the G-7 Summit had two topics of interest; confirming that all NATO nations agreed to respect article five, which states that ‘if one of NATO’s members is attacked, they are all under attack;’ and that the Paris Agreement referring to climate change be reinstated. Trump did neither.
Trump began a period of virtual isolationism for the United States. Years of efforts by the developed nations to combine their efforts for the common good were dashed in just a few days.
Instead of stressing unity, Trump talked about money to the members of NATO. Not the time to do it. When it came to the Paris Agreement, which is an agreement to reduce carbon emissions, it was no surprise that Trump refused to add his signature. He denies that climate change is caused by man’s use of petroleum products, and has signed executive orders which allow the oil companies to drill anywhere they choose.
Ms. Merkel was correct when she said; “we need to know we must fight for our own future as Europeans for our destiny.”
This deteriorating situation is our fault, or at least the fault of any man or woman who voted for Trump. Plainly put, so they can understand, ‘he doesn’t know what he’s doing.’ Trump was so far outclassed at these two gatherings, I was embarrassed for my country. Just over four months in office and Trump has proven himself to be the worst president in our nation’s 240 year history.
Finally, a question for Trump’s “basket of deplorables;” are you having fun yet?
