Maybe it’s the fact that Trump’s approval rating has dropped to 33 percent. Maybe it’s the polls that reveal the fact that most Americans do not trust Trump and that they believe that he colluded with Russia during the election. And maybe it’s simply the fact that Republicans are tiring of his antics and his failure to accomplish anything of significance is six months and 16 days. Whatever the reason, Republicans in the Senate are challenging Trump’s authority and removing some of his power. The House, under the failed leadership of Paul Ryan, has yet to lose its hypocritical support for their immoral leader.
The Senate passed a rule forbidding Trump from altering or revoking sanctions placed upon Russia for its interference in our 2016 election. It has also taken the action of not declaring a formal August recess to prevent Trump from making recess appointments which would allow a Trump nominee to avoid Senate hearings. The Senate doesn’t trust Trump either.
Trump’s penchant for tweeting has also harmed him. He has used this social media to attack anyone who opposes him, including congress. This has caused a backlash from several members of his own party.
Trump has weakened his own presidency by his partisan tactics. He has completely ignored Democrats, believing that he can bully his own party into acting upon his personal agenda. He refuses to learn from his mistakes. When Trumpcare failed so badly, an intelligent man would have learned something about the workings of government.
“What we’re seeing today is that that system of checks and balances is now in total response to the Trump presidency and it’s coming from a lot of different directions — it’s coming from Congress, from people in the administration and others who are more openly rejecting what the president is doing,” said former defense secretary Leon Panetta, who was also White House chief of staff to President Bill Clinton. “The concern about that is that it weakens the power of the commander in chief as president.”
Any man or woman who works in Washington and loves his or her country must reject Trump’s divisive and unconstitutional proposals. Our country is already divided by red and blue states purposely created by political parties. Our nation cannot survive an illegitimate president who ignores the majority of our nation’s people.
