It shouldn’t be this hard. At least for now the United States of America is a democratic republic. The will of the people should become the duty of our government. However, for 10 months and 28 days of the Trump administration, he and his hypocritical party have chosen to ignore the needs and wished of the majority. Trump has ignored the fact that 17 women have accused him of sexual assault, although 70 percent of all Americans believe that there should be a full investigation.
The horrific healthcare bill which came to be known as “Trumpcare,” was a thinly disguised effort to repeal Obamacare without a viable replacement. Protests across the United States were ignored by most Republicans. Only three Republican senators voted against the destructive bill. 49 of 52 Republicans voted against the wishes of the American people.
The same is true about “tax reform.” The majority of the American people are opposed to its passage, but it appears to be headed for Trump’s desk to be signed.
The elections in Virginia and Alabama gave real Americans new hope. A recent poll may be even more telling about the displeasure of the American people related to Trump’s failed administration.
50 percent of all those polled said that they would prefer Democratic control of Congress, while only 39 percent preferred Republican dominance. This is the first time since 2008 that this situation has occurred.
Let’s be honest; Republicans are unable to govern effectively. Reagan left office with our finances in shambles. Employment was at 10 percent. There was a trillion dollar deficit thanks to the failure of ‘trickle-down economics.’
George H.W. Bush was unable to repair the damage and lost his reelection bid in 1992. He was replaced by Democrat Bill Clinton. When President Clinton left office in 2001, our nation experienced a surplus.
After eight years of a George W. Bush administration, our nation experienced a near depression, and we remained engaged in two unwinnable wars. Tens of thousands of Americans suffered through home foreclosures. The unemployment rate rose to an entirely unacceptable level.
When Barrack Obama was sworn in on January 20, 2009, he inherited an almost impossible situation. When he left office in January, our nation was in full recovery. Unemployment numbers continue to fall thanks to efforts made by his administration. The stock market hit record highs and continues to rise. All of this was accomplished by Democrats.
Today, our nation’s future is in flux. Most of the regulations passed by President Obama to ensure that our nation would not experience near bankruptcy again, have been removed by Trump. All of his proposals benefit the wealthy and harm the majority. The largest benefactor is Trump himself who will not only receive tax cuts, but also huge breaks from his many real estate holdings. The Trump family will become more wealthy, while you and yours will experience a reduction in their quality of life.
Although we cannot experience the benefits of having a Democrat in the White House until January of 2021, the House and Senate can be returned to Democrats on November 6, 2018. The House has become a large possibility, and although only eight Republican Senators are up for reelection, winning just two would change the balance of power.
One definite possibility is Dean Heller in my state of Nevada. He has become a Trump toady, and increasingly unpopular, especially in Southern Nevada.
On November 8, 2016, the people of my state elected Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto to the Senate. She is not only a Democrat, she is also the first Latina Senator in our nation’s history. Times are changing, and if the end of 2017 is a forecast of what is to come in 2018, ‘hope is alive.’
