Comedians have some of the sharpest minds in the world, and prove it when they ad lib, or are clever enough to reverse a news story and make us laugh. It has been far too easy for most television comics to get laughs mimicking Trump, or simply using his own words and actions. Not many of them choose Mike Pence when they and their writers create a monologue.

John Oliver has a weekly show on HBO called “Last Week Tonight.” His subject this week was a children’s book written by the Trump family titled “Marlon Bundo’s Day in the Life of the Vice President.” The main character is a rabbit. One of Oliver’s writers, Jill Twiss, teamed up with illustrator, EG Keller, to write a “Better Bundo Book.”

“You’ll notice right away that our rabbit has a bow tie, so there’s that,” he said on “Last Week Tonight” on Sunday. “Also, our story is about Marlon Bundo falling in love with another boy rabbit, because our Marlon Bundo is gay, just like the real Marlon Bundo.”

The title is “A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo.” All proceeds will go to the ‘Trevor Project,’ which benefits LGBTQ youth, as well as the AIDS United charity. In this book the gay Bundo is harassed by a ‘stink bug’ who looks suspiciously like homophobe Mike Pence.

I often reflect on the bad joke played upon America by millions of ignorant voters. Our illegitimate president is a sexual predator, a white supremacist, and a traitor, and our vice-president is America’s leading homophobe. In other words, we have two men in our nation’s highest elected offices who are not Americans; two men who do not support the Constitution.

John Oliver is an ‘intellectual comedian’ who makes me laugh out loud. His humor is accurate but fair, and never ‘mean spirited.’ Trump and Pence create the jokes themselves, and to know that they are actually in control of a nation of 320 million people is a farce.

I hope the Oliver team’s book sells millions; that would be pure justice.
