In 2012 Rick Santorum attempted to win the Republican nomination for the presidency. After Republican voters learned that he was a religious extremist, failed to understand our nation’s problems, and had an A+ rating from the NRA, he appeared to be a perfect candidate for the right wing. Sadly, as the debates continued, America learned that he was mentally unfit for the job.
Two days ago Santorum revealed that his mental problems have escalated and his devotion to the NRA has grown. He defended the NRA’s greed and lack of concern for the safety of the majority of the American people by suggesting the most ridiculous solution anyone has ever heard. There’s no cure for stupid.
These were Santorum’s remarks on CNN Sunday.
“How about kids, instead of looking to someone else to solve their problem, do something about maybe taking CPR classes, or try to deal with situations where there is some violence and how you actually respond to that?”
Santorum also used the NRA’s standard attack, claiming that the high school students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High were protesting for political reasons although almost every one of the young speakers stressed that their movement was not political in any way. They stressed one thing; if a politician takes money from the NRA, he or she should be voted out of office.
Their cause is just, and their passion and courage have renewed my hope for the future of America.
Republicans like Santorum have proven themselves to be hypocrites and cowards. They are allowing Trump to attack our democracy and our freedoms. Although they once denounced his lack of qualifications, his racism, and the fact that he is void of all morality, they now bow to him and place their party in the number one priority. GOP politicians have ignored the majority of Americans for more than 25 years. Enough is too much.
The NRA and its puppets on the right wing will not win this war. Some Americans are so angry that they are suggesting extremes. Most Americans believe that military assault rifles and high-output magazines must be banned. Progressives who are more extreme are calling for the repeal of the second amendment.
I am not in that group, although the original purpose for the amendment is no longer valid. Our founding fathers rejected the idea of a standing army; they believed in a militia. Today we have the largest military in the world; the very idea of a militia has become ludicrous.
Santorum is another member of America’s past. He has two choices; join younger voters who will be in control of our government in less than two decades, or get the hell out of the way.
Please vote on November 6th; many of these high school students will be too young. We can vote for them.
