When Dwight D. Eisenhower, one of the few great Republican presidents in our nation’s history, ran for reelection in 1956, this was his party’s platform.
Assistance to low-income communities
Protect Social Security
Provide asylum for refugees
Extend the minimum wage
Improve unemployment benefits to cover more people
Strengthen labor laws so workers can join unions
Equal pay regardless of sex
This was the Republican platform in the 2016 election.
Reduce or repeal all social programs
Change Social Security and require payment at age 70
Ban all Muslims from entering America
Eliminate the minimum wage
Lower unemployment benefits
Put an end to all labor unions
Women are treated equally; no changes are necessary
When I claim that today’s failed right wing politicians are ‘Republican in name only,’ you can understand why. This group is the party of special interests who have a single goal; remove democracy and establish a plutocracy. The frightening truth is that a plutocracy cannot exist without fascism.
Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and Dwight D. Eisenhower would denounce their own party today. Trump and his failed party have chosen not to ‘preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution’ as they all promised when the took the oath of office.
What can we do about this group of hypocrites and cowards? We can win this war; we can vote. On November 6th we can remove all power from their illegitimate president. If we remove all Republicans in name only from office, Democrats will regain control of the House and the Senate. Republicans have moved so far to the right that they have lost their way. They have no principles and no ideas to move our nation forward into the 21st century. Time for real change; the GOP no longer exists. If it implodes as expected, a new party which will serve the people will emerge from the ashes. Deliberation and compromise will return and our government will no longer be dysfunctional.
