In what he believed were closed events, Nevada Senator Dean Heller revealed his fear of losing his reelection bid in November. His Democratic challenger, Jacky Rosen, is polling evenly in our state which has become purple, and leaning towards blue.
Heller admitted that if 100,000 more Democrats are registered than Republicans, he cannot win. He is also hoping that his pitiful reelection bid could be aided by the retirement of Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. He believes that appointing another conservative justice prior to the November election could give him the boost he needs to win.
Let’s discuss some facts which offer proof that Heller is fighting an uphill battle. First of all Heller was an avid supporter of Trump’s effort to repeal Obamacare and remove healthcare from hundreds of thousands of Nevadans. He was one of the authors of Trump’s tax reform which has already failed miserably. Only a small percentage of Americans have experienced an increase in their net pay, and that will end in less than two years. It was a two-year plan for the majority of Americans, while tax cuts for large corporations and the one-percent are permanent. It will increase the deficit by 1.8 trillion dollars over ten years.
Currently Republicans hold a one person advantage in the Senate at 51-49. Heller’s loss would change our nation’s government immediately.
The 2016 election revealed a change in my state which appears to be gaining momentum. On November 8, 2016, Hillary Clinton won our electoral votes. The voters in my state elected a Democratic senator who is the first Hispanic woman ever to have a seat in the senate. Popular Republicans in Nevada campaigned against two ballot issues and failed. Our state now requires background checks for all gun purchases, including from the many gun and outdoor shows in our state. We also approved recreational marijuana, which has already added millions of dollars in tax revenue to our economy.
Besides Heller’s desperate attempt to maintain his seat in the senate, where he has failed our state’s people, there will be a tight battle to replace a very popular Republican governor, Brian Sandoval.
Adam Laxalt is a Republican, and our state’s current Attorney General. Laxalt has none of the charisma of his predecessor, and most Nevadans believe that he won his election because of his last name. His father was a popular governor. Laxalt’s negatives are that he supports Trump’s negative policies, and is opposed to Planned Parenthood.
His Democratic opponent is Steve Sisolak. After receiving a Masters degree from UNLV in 1978, he began a communications business. He raised two daughters as a single father; both graduated from UNLV; one with a law degree, and the other with a masters. He served on the Nevada Board of Regents for 10 years, and now serves as the Chairman of the Clark County Commission.
His involvement in Southern Nevada is important. I live in the less populated area of Northern Nevada, while Las Vegas and Henderson have the greater majority of voters. Whichever candidate wins the votes of southern Nevadans will win the election.
Heller must go; he has failed in his position. He has not represented the needs and wishes of his constituents since he replaced disgraced Republican Senator John Ensign in May of 2011. His devotion to Trump is unforgivable and embarrassing.
Please vote and remember; Republicans have proven that they do not deserve their lives of luxury and privilege.
