The base of the Republican Party is primarily white, Christian, and 50 years of age or older. For years Republican politicians have waged war on minorities, women, and any American who is not a supporter of the Christian religious right. They have completely ignored millennials, and the next generation of voters who are soon to turn 18 years of age.
I have learned in the last 16 months and seven days that a single good has come from Trump’s illegitimate presidency. Beginning on January 21, 2017, women announced that they were going to save our nation from the most immoral man in our nation’s history, and save our country for their children and grandchildren.
Then on Valentine’s Day, this year, another school shooting not only shocked every man, woman, and child in America, it forced a response from the survivors of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. These young men and women spoke out about tragedies related to gun violence, and the failure of our elected officials to take any action. Republicans simply accept gun violence in America as the new normal.
Once again GOP politicians ignored the fact that some of these courageous young men and women who marched on Washington in March will be able to vote in November, and nearly all will be able to vote in 2020. They are opposed to the NRA; one of the owners of the GOP; and have promised to vote against any politician who accepts money from the gun lobby.
If the special elections of 2018, and the primaries have proven anything, it is the fact that women are making a difference; they are running for public office, and winning. Millennials and the next group of voters are joining them.
One single primary would have shocked and scared the hell out of Republican leaders, if they had any common sense. Stacey Abrams won the Democratic nomination for Georgia’s governor. In one of the ‘reddest’ states in the union, a black woman has done the impossible; Ms. Abrams could become the first female, black governor in American history.
Take just a minute to consider this possibility. This is the ‘Trump Effect’ at its highest level. Ms. Abrams is articulate, qualified, and would be a great governor for the people of Georgia.
On the Republican side, voters were split during the primary. A runoff election will be held on July 24th between Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle, and Brian Kemp. This is a favorable situation for Ms. Abrams who can begin her campaign immediately, and focus on her supporters while attempting to bring Republicans to her side.
Women are wise, and have a single goal; register voters and encourage them to go to the polls on November 6th. History proves that a larger voter turnout results in victories for Democrats and Independents. Yes, we the people can take our country back from our enemies.
