I like Bill Maher, although I frequently disagree with him. Opinions are only important to those who have them, and I respect that fact. Maher is often ‘right on,’ and on Fridays broadcast of ‘Real Time with Bill Maher,’ he nailed the truth about both of our political parties.

“Conservatives govern without shame and liberals shame without governing,” he said.

Nailed it! Republicans lie to, and mislead the American people, and have been for years. They do it without any shame and refuse to accept criticism when their lies are exposed.

Democrats celebrate small victories such as the firing of Rosanne Barr, but refuse to stand up and tell the American people the truth. They occasionally talk about the issues, but what we need is for them to go to war with Trump and his hypocritical party. We need many more women, and younger men, to lead us into battle with passion and purpose.

I have been writing about this for nearly two years. I am proud not to be a member of either party. I was 21 in 1967, and when I voted in my first election I knew that I would be a lifelong Independent. I voted for candidates from both parties, and on issues important to the right and the left. In other words, I voted for what I believed to be right, or at least right for me and those I love. I consider myself too intelligent to cast my vote for a party instead of the candidate. However, for nearly three decades I have been ashamed of today’s Republicans in name only. They have not supported the working class for far too many years. They have become the party of special interests.

Democrats have some excellent ideas, but refuse to fight for them. Most importantly, they have allowed Trump to lie and destroy our democracy for 16 months and 20 days, refusing to tell the truth to the people. When they appear on television media, they soft peddle the facts. Trump is the worst thing ever to happen to our nation. He is an embarrassment to the title of President of the United States. How can congress allow the most immoral and mentally incompetent man in our nation to remain in the West Wing?

“I’m often surprised how often liberals I talk to think that we’re winning. We, who control nothing. Winning?” Maher asked.

Perhaps this final quote says the most, and is a challenge to Democratic leadership.

“We get to banish actors. Liberals control the culture, yes, but right now wouldn’t you rather control the border?”

Change is desperately needed in Washington. However, it’s not just ridding our nation of Republicans. All Democrats 60 years of age and over must be replaced by young Independents. The average age in our nation is 37.8 years of age.
