I have been suggesting that the Democratic Party move back to the left and return to its principles for years. Politicians on the left side of the aisle must become very aggressive in their support of the needs of all Americans; action must replace rhetoric. For far too many years Republicans have controlled the political atmosphere in Washington and this is part of the reason we have an illegitimate president defiling the White House today.
Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi call themselves the ‘leaders of the Democratic Party.’ Although it’s true that they may be the leaders of this party, but this is not my party nor the party of most liberals. Maxine Waters is now the leader of my people’s party.
Bernie Sanders’ campaign revealed that the largest voting bloc, millennials, want a return to liberal policies and they want aggressive candidates who will challenge the ‘old guard,’ and the enemy; Republicans.
On Tuesday a primary election in New York’s 14th district revealed the new direction of the Democratic Party. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old Democratic Socialist, defeated the nearly 20-year incumbent, Joe Crowley. Crowley was the number four Democrat in the House and expected to become Nancy Pelosi’s successor.
“The fact that in a very progressive district in New York, it went more progressive — and (incumbent Rep.) Joe Crowley is a progressive — but to the left of Joe Crowley is about that district,” Pelosi said. “It is not to be viewed as something that stands for everything else.” Really? Have you been looking at election results during the last year?
My dreams may be coming true. I have been suggesting that we need more women and younger Americans in congress for a very long time. Our government should mirror our nation’s population. We are a young country, and there are more women than men. We are diverse, and that is why we may become great in the future.
One last time for those of you who haven’t read me before. My greatest dream is to live long enough to see a 40-year-old black woman elected as the President of the United States. She would be a member of the LGBTQ community and a Muslim. Now that’s my idea of a real American.
