On July 11, and 12, the annual meeting of NATO will be held in Brussels. Trump will attend. However, his attendance will not be greeted warmly. At the G7 summit this month the orange man alienated nearly every one of our closest allies.
After he leaves the meetings, Trump will travel to Helsinki to meet with his mentor, Vladimir Putin.
The results of these two events are unknown, but our European allies are already expressing deep concerns.
During the 2016 campaign Trump was a boisterous critic of NATO. His lack of knowledge about our nation’s and the world’s history is very dangerous. NATO is likely the most important factor in the prevention of a major military conflict involving the west vs the east. Could Trump remove America from NATO? More importantly, will cowardly GOP politicians allow him to destroy our most important treaty?
The timing of his meeting on the 16th with Vladimir Putin adds to the uneasiness of our closest allies. Putin is a former KGB agent and his goal at that time was to break up NATO and isolate the United States from its allies; nothing has changed.
Trump’s hero worship of Putin has raised eyebrows at home and around the world.
For me, I find this the final piece of proof that Trump colluded with Putin during the election. His gift from the Electoral College is illegitimate, and he should be impeached and tried for treason. Violating our most important Constitutional right is unforgivable and should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.
In the last two months Trump has chosen to support the two most despicable tyrants in the world. Putin and Kim Jong-un have no conscience when they order the murders of their adversaries. Both Russia and North Korea are populated by millions of men, women, and children living in abject poverty while their leaders enjoy lives of extreme luxury and privilege. These are Trump’s role models.
The press, and I will witness our fingers flying across the keyboard on July 17th. We can hope for the best, but this is difficult to do with the ‘worst’ wearing the label of President of the United States.
