Immigration reform is one of the biggest issues facing our nation. It is only secondary to growing poverty and addressing Russian interference in our elections. But this is not a new problem, it has not been effectively addressed for decades. The last time a president honestly acted on the issue was George H.W. Bush, and before him Ronald Reagan. The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 resulted in the last two real Republican presidents taking actions which pardoned more than 100,000 illegal immigrants, allowing them to remain in America and offering a path to citizenship.

Efforts by Bill Clinton and Barrack Obama to introduce legislation to address nearly 12 million undocumented workers were blocked by a Republican controlled congress, better known as Mitch McConnell’s “do-nothing congress.” Trump has completely ignored these Americans and DACA recipients. He is too busy taking racist actions to reject thousands of Hispanics seeking asylum at our border, and at the same time separating children from their parents.

Recently a partisan bill addressing a small portion of the problem was presented to Trump, who claimed that he would sign the legislation. He reneged on a promise once again and refused to sign it. Trump’s white supremacy will never allow him to treat any minority fairly.

Immigration reform which fairly and compassionately addresses the problem is now the sole responsibility of Republicans. They have chosen to eliminate participation by Democrats. A one-party system destroys a Democratic Republic. Without honest deliberation and compromise, nothing substantial will ever happen. Republicans have proven for decades that they lack the ability to govern, and continue to do so.

This problem has become a “hot button” issue. Right wing extremists who lean towards white supremacy engage in heated arguments with liberals. It has become a battle between unwarranted hatred and compassion for all mankind.

I can only make one accurate and undeniable claim. Nothing positive will be accomplished by this administration.
