The Democratic Party is experiencing a resurgence. For at least two decades party leadership has been moving to the right and away from its liberal roots. Special elections and primaries in 2018 have proven that Democratic voters are tired of passive leaders like Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer.
When Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defeated Joe Crowley, a 20-year Representative who was in-line to replace Pelosi, a “new and improved” Democratic Party was born. Ms. Ocasio-Cortez is a self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist who is challenging her own party and will fight against Trump’s fascist party.
Chuck Schumer is 67 years of age; Pelosi is 78. The average age of all Americans is 37.8 years old. Any politician who is over 60 years old cannot relate or represent the majority of our nation’s people. Ms. Ocasio-Cortez is 28-years-of-age.
Ayanna Pressley is challenging Mike Capuano for the Democratic candidacy in Boston’s 7th district. He is 66-years-of-age and has been in office since 1999. Ms. Pressley is 44-years-of-age and was the first African-American ever elected to the Boston City Council.
“This is between me and the people, and that’s who I’m working to make my case to every day,” Pressley said. “For those that might consider this candidacy to be some sort of traitorous act, I believe I’m operating from the greatest of loyalty to my party, because I’m meeting head-on the charge that we were given coming out of 2016.”
Conservative Democrats advocate “more of the same” in 2018 and 2020. They would be wrong. The Democratic Party must become aggressive and leave its passive philosophies behind.
We must be proud to be liberals once again. We believe in the rights and equality of all Americans. We are not racist, bigoted, and know that women and men are equals. We place people before profit. And we treasure every word of the Bill of Rights. This is who Democrats are.
