How the Supreme Court Rejected its Purpose

scotus

Unlike today’s politicians in Washington, our founding fathers were principled and wise. They established three independent branches of government which would protect the rights and freedoms of all Americans. Each branch has specific powers. The executive and judicial branches are more motivated by political philosophies than doing the right thing much of the time. This is why our government is broken today.

The Supreme Court was given a single purpose. Every issue the Court agrees to adjudicate must be judged on a single issue; does it support or violate the Constitution. Sadly, although the intent of our founding fathers that the Court was to be apolitical, that is no longer true today. Decisions including “Citizens United” are frequently made based on political bias.

Last night Trump nominated his second Supreme Court Justice. This should have been his first, but America’s biggest traitor, Mitch McConnell, refused to hold hearings for Merrick Garland, President Obama’s nominee. However, when Brett Kavanaugh is confirmed the Court will now be divided with five Republicans and four Democrats.

Thanks to support of the Christian religious right, Republicans have created two issues which should have remained personal choice. Republicans support of this lobby is a direct violation of the first amendment, but no one is talking about the truth. Being “politically correct” has replaced the law of the land.

Will this Republican-dominated Court seek to overturn a woman’s right to choose the health of her own body and ban the LGBTQ community from having equal rights under the Constitution? The possibility is frightening. Once again, the “Trump Party” wants to move our nation backwards instead of joining the rest of the developed world and moving forward.

If every American ignored their emotions, which make us weak, and used their intellect, Republicans would never win another election. History proves that when Democrats are in control of our government the majority of Americans experience an improved quality of life. Freedoms are protected, and the needs of low-income and impoverished Americans are seriously addressed. Republicans are the party of special interests; period.
