Our nation’s government is dysfunctional. This was the situation prior to Trump’s illegitimate win of the Electoral College, although it is far worse today.
On the right side of the aisle is a disjointed group of men and women who claim to be “Republicans;” they are not. This party in name only is a jumbled mess of moderates, extremists, and reactionaries.
On the left side of the aisle sit cowards. Democrat’s sole purpose is “not to lose elections.” They have become a passive group of old men and women who refuse to be aggressive and fight for the American people. Their passive approach has failed and change must come. Talk is cheap, we need action.
As an Independent I often choose “none of the above” when I vote. I will only vote for a candidate who I believe will support my needs and my wishes. All too often that person is neither a Republican or a Democrat. Change is mandatory if democracy is to return to our nation’s government.
If you are a Washington politician, arguments are a good thing. Deliberation leads to compromise and this is the definition of a Democratic Republic. These necessary abilities are non-existent today.
In special elections and primaries, a trend has appeared. Women have decided not to stand on the sidelines. Progressive female candidates have shocked political experts by winning elections and defeating incumbents in primaries.
The most surprising win of a Democratic nomination which sent a clear message to failed leaders on the left side of the aisle was by a 28-year-old woman in New York. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defeated 20-year incumbent Representative Joe Crowley for the nomination in the 15th district.
Crowley was the 4th ranking Democrat in the House and was being considered as a replacement for Nancy Pelosi. Ms. Ocasio-Cortez is a self-proclaimed Democratic Socialist; a true liberal.
In Boston 44-year-old Ayanna Pressley is challenging 66-year-old Michael Capuano for a seat in the 5th district.
In Texas 45-year-old Beto O’Rourke is battling “the most hated man in the Senate,” Ted Cruz, for the incumbent’s seat in the Senate. Mr. O’Rourke is running close in the polls in one of the reddest states in America.
The average age in America is 37.8 years of age. 50.9 percent of our nation’s population are women. We desperately need men and more women in Washington who are truly representative of our nation’s people. Today’s members of the House and Senate average 60 years of age, and in all of congress only 19 percent of women are representing the American people.
Aggressive, young liberals such as Ocasio-Cortez, Pressley, and O’Rourke are the new faces of a soon-to-be revitalized Democratic Party who will win elections, and not simply be “seat-savers.”
