For nearly three decades the former Republican Party has failed the majority of our nation’s people. They have become the party of special interests and continue to ignore the needs and concerns of the working class.
Democrats continue to move to the right ignoring their liberal roots. Lots of rhetoric but little action defines today’s leaders of what once was the ‘working man’s party.’
I don’t know if Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi, and others are paying attention, but in 2018 special elections and primaries the number of victories for more liberal men and women is on the rise. Their positions on the issues have moved back to the left when Democrats dominated the political atmosphere.
The warning shot was fired in the Bronx. A 29-year-old Latina, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez defeated 20-year incumbent Joe Crowley in the 14th district to win their party’s nomination for the House. She proudly describes herself as a “Democratic Socialist.” She is now campaigning around the nation for other progressives.
The reality is that as our country changed, our government remained stagnant. They have displayed arrogance while refusing to serve the American people. Much of this is based on reality. Congress is primarily composed of old, white men. As our nation becomes more diverse, so must our government. Women maintain the majority of our nation’s population, but only 19 percent in congress. The average age in congress is 60 years of age, while the average age of an American citizen is 37.8.
As our government continues to fail our country’s people, we know how to change that fact. We have the ultimate weapon; our vote. As long as we continue to have that weapon, we must use it and use it wisely.
I am 72 years old and will not be voting for anyone over the age of 55. If a woman is running for any office, I will learn about her position on the issues important to me, and if they align, she will receive my vote. Any candidate who supports Trump’s vile agenda will never receive my approval. I have standards, principles, and morals which forbid me to support anyone who bows to a man who directly opposes my beliefs.
We can save America; join the revolution. It officially begins on November 6, 2018.
