Poverty in America currently affects over 46 million people. Income inequality is widening. More than 100 million Americans are considered ‘low-income,’ and are one paycheck away from slipping below the poverty line. Capitalism has failed one half of all Americans.
For 540 billionaires and 10.8 million millionaires capitalism is a big success. For the rest of our nation’s people, not so much.
Bernie Sanders’ success in 2016 was based on his belief that capitalism must be replaced by Democratic Socialism. Democratic socialism is defined as “having a socialist economy in which the means of production (including wealth) are socially and collectively owned or controlled alongside a politically democratic system of government.”
Two countries which have established this form of government are Denmark and Sweden. In a study Denmark was labeled the “happiest country in the world.”
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ran for the Democratic nomination for the 14th district in New York. She defeated Joe Crowley who had represented that district for nearly 20 years and considered the probable replacement for Nancy Pelosi. Ms. Ocasio-Cortez ran as a Democratic Socialist. Weeks later she won the 15 district with a ‘write-in vote.’ The people are standing up led by women and younger voters.
You know that the right wing is afraid that the Democratic Party will move back to the left when its propaganda machine; FOX Noise; writes an article with this title.
“Democrats’ love of socialism is a losing strategy – but they foolishly follow it anyway”
Remember these facts. Hillary crushed Trump in the popular vote. Less than a total of 80 thousand votes in three states gave Trump the Electoral College. This although Vladimir Putin, James Comey, and the television media aided and abetted Trump’s campaign.
In addition, the turnout for women was lower than expected, and millennials virtually stayed away from the polling booths after Bernie ended his campaign.
For years I have been saying that it’s time for the Democratic Party’s leadership to stop talking and take action. The Party must move back to the left and its principles and ideas.
Finally; this nation belongs to the people. We have the right to expect our government to place us first. We could be as ‘happy as the people of Denmark’ if our government did its job.
