Trump’s tariffs were a rash and ignorant idea. Consumers are beginning to fear the effects at the cash register. Walmart, the nation’s largest retailer, is expressing fear that they will be forced to raise prices on manufactured goods within the next few months.
“Where you have real-world effects of the trade war, you see people’s opinions sour dramatically,” said Scott Lincicome, a trade lawyer and adjunct scholar at the Cato Institute who is studying the links between public opinion and trade. “You look at places like Washington state where people are dependent on exporting cherries and apples, or rust belt states that border Canada, or Tennessee with auto and bourbon makers, and you are going to see close races where this is actually a decisive issue.”
The few intelligent Republicans remaining are seriously worried that Trump’s folly will result in losses in states which have been Republican strongholds.
This group of GOP politicians is Republican in name only. In just over 20 months they surrendered their morals, principle, dignity, and respect to woo Trump’s supporters. They are now the “Trump Party” and are hated by most Americans. This foolhardy action by Trump and Secretary of Commerce, Wilbur Ross, may be the end all for Republican candidates on November 6th.
