The Day the Last Stronghold of Democracy Died; 10-06-18

Lawrence O'Donnell

For the last 30 years the House of Representatives has been dysfunctional. Americans have relied on the Senate to remain a democratic body of legislators who would save America for the people. Sadly, yesterday the Republican-controlled Senate surrendered to the fascist in the White House, and the last hope for real Americans died.

Only one-third of all Americans supported the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Republican senators refused to listen.

Lawrence O’Donnell has a show on MSNBC called “the Last Word.” He is generally a mild reporter, but after Kavanaugh was forced upon the American people, he offered a lengthy retort.

“There is an unfortunate truth at the base of what most people are feeling tonight. And that truth is that the Senate is not a democratic institution. That is the sickening core of what we feel deep down when we watch the Senate work. The Senate destroys the American illusion of democracy as it was designed to do. We are allowed to ignore that uncomfortable truth most of the time. But not now. The Founders deliberately created an antidemocratic institution and called it the United States Senate.”

The feeling most Americans experienced on Saturday, October 6, 2018 was similar to the emotions experienced on November 9, 2016. Hope for our nation and its future was lost. Extreme sadness dominated the feelings of most Americans as we witnessed the last vestige of democracy surrender to an illegitimate president who is not a true American.

Yesterday was a call to all real Americans to rise up and save America. We can begin with a non-violent revolution on November 6th. This is the first, and hopefully only time, when I will suggest that if a candidate has an “R” next to his or her name, vote for anyone else but that person. We are at war with Republican politicians and only your vote can defeat this hypocritical and failed group of old men and women.
