The Similarities Between Trump and Netanyahu

Netanyahu

Trump has been engaged in a ‘bromance’ with Vladimir Putin for about 32 years. However, he has two new love affairs. One has been well publicized, and may be in decline. During their last meeting, Trump and Kim Jong-un apparently had a lover’s spat.

However, Trump is engaged in a growing relationship with another super-white man, Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu.

Trump admitted that he has ‘great respect’ for Netanyahu and his dictatorial style. They share a belief in extreme nationalism. Recently Netanyahu declared that Israel is exclusively a “Jewish state.”

The truth is that Netanyahu is a ‘land grabber’ and the greatest obstacle to lasting peace in the Middle East. He has consistently refused to engage in peace talks with Palestinian leadership. He is also under investigation for three counts of corruption.

Israel was recognized as a ‘state’ is 1948; Palestinians continue to wait for recognition. The truth is that the majority of members in the United Nations support the Palestinian people.

Netanyahu is facing reelection as Israel’s Prime Minister. Some polls show him slightly behind his competition. Netanyahu adopted the tactics of George W. Bush in 2004; fearmongering. He has established himself as the “protector of the Israeli people.” Just days ago, he promised to annex the entire West Bank if he wins reelection.

Israelis would tell you that they are very happy. Some evaluations by experts reveal a slightly different story. Emotionally they are angry, depressed, and worried about the future. It appears that Netanyahu has what Trump wants; a stranglehold on his nation’s people.

The election is this Tuesday, April 9th. The election is decided by the party who wins a minimum of 61 seats out of 120 in parliament. Voters do not directly cast their ballots for an individual candidate. In 2015 voter turnout reached nearly 72 percent of all eligible voters; a similar situation is expected next week.

Netanyahu is challenged by Benny Gantz, a former leader of the Israeli army. Although the attorney general is expected to indict Netanyahu for one charge of bribery and two counts of fraud, Netanyahu is expected to win his fifth term. If this sounds familiar, it should. Netanyahu calls the investigation a “witch hunt.”
