Trump’s lawyers are making desperate attempts to hide the truth from the American people. The House Oversight Committee has requested subpoenas for multiple men and women requiring them to testify before Congress, including former White House attorney, Don McGahn and several White House aides. Trump’s tax returns have been requested from the IRS, but Steve Mnuchin continues to ignore Chairman Elijah Cummings’ demands.
Trump and his lawyers are falsely claiming that the House has no legal right to investigate the orange man. They should go back to law school. Our founding fathers created three branches of government with a “check and balance” system. The details of the powers and responsibilities of each branch reveal facts Trump and his failed attorneys apparently don’t understand. Congress was given the most power for a single reason. The men who wrote the Constitution gave certain powers to Congress which prevent the possibility of America becoming a monarchy or any other form of autocracy.
When hypocritical Republicans controlled both Houses of Congress, our check and balance system failed. Paul Ryan’s cowardly House obeyed every illegal and immoral demand from their fuhrer. Today, with a younger and more progressive Democratically controlled House, Trump whines every day because he has lost most of his power.
The truth is that it is the duty of Congress to investigate the executive branch when corruption, immoral, or illegal actions are suspected. The job of Congress is multi-faceted. Most Americans think that their sole function is to vote for or against bills presented to them from House members or a bill which originated in the Senate. That would be entirely incorrect.
Congress, the House, is the only body which can declare a war. As a point of interest, the last time Congress took such action was prior to the United States entering WWII. To make this clear, the Korean conflict, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq were never “American wars;” they were wars created by presidents under false pretenses.
Congress has the power to override a presidential veto. A two-thirds vote in both chambers can reverse the executive branch’s decision.
I know that Trump cannot read and has the attention span of a five-year-old, but someone should read this to him. As our illegitimate president he should know something about American law, and about his responsibilities as our nation’s fake-president.
