Mitt Romney; Another Republican Hypocrite

What was the purpose behind Mitt Romney choosing to run for the soon to be vacated senate seat held by Orin Hatch in Utah? He had been snubbed and even belittled by Trump.
In March of 2016, four months before the Republican convention, Romney had the following to say.
“Here’s what I know: Donald Trump is a phony, a fraud,” Romney said. “His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University. He’s playing members of the American public for suckers: He gets a free ride to the White House, and all we get is a lousy hat.” Romney said that “dishonesty is Donald Trump’s hallmark,” pointing to his “bullying, the greed, the showing off, the misogyny, the absurd third-grade theatrics.”
He added a tweet later.
“If Trump had said 4 years ago the things he says today about the KKK, Muslims, Mexicans, disabled, I would NOT have accepted his endorsement.”
After the election, Romney had dinner with Trump. The purpose was reported as a discussion about Romney possibly receiving and accepting the nomination for Secretary of State. Today he supports all of Trump’s fallacious claims; every one of his egregious lies.
Why support Trump now? After Romney was sworn in, he intimated that his purpose in Washington would be to counter Trump’s vile agenda. While it’s true that he has voted against several Trump proposals, on the issues important to his party he chooses Trump instead of doing the right thing.Another senator who wished to remain anonymous said the following.
“Sen. Romney is a very sophisticated, very polite sort of guy. And I’m sure the president’s style rankles him,” said one Republican senator. But Romney’s anti-Trump votes haven’t “made the difference in the outcome. That’s where people start to get a little sensitive.”
Hypocrisy is standard operating system in this Republican Party in name only.
