Republican politicians are desperate to save the Electoral College. In “red” states Republicans are gerrymandering districts to give them an unfair advantage in elections. It is a statistical fact that without these two unconstitutional efforts, the GOP would never win a presidential election.
First, let’s get to the truth. The Electoral College voids the votes of millions of Americans every four years. Another fact is there would be no “red” or “blue” states if every vote counted. Every argument is without merit that opposes the Electoral College. The people should elect the president. This is not a states rights issue, it is a Constitutional issue. The suggestion that some states would lose power in the general election is ludicrous. The fact is that without the Electoral College, candidates would be forced to campaign in all 50 states.
The real reason Republicans fear the repeal of the Electoral College is that they are unpopular with most Americans. Since 1993 only Democrats would have occupied the White House if the majority of the people chose their leader. Democrats have won the popular vote in six out of the last seven elections. Only in 2004, George W. Bush’s second term, did the right wing win the vote of the people. Bush would have never had a second term without the Electoral College and the Supreme Court’s assistance in 2000.
Presidential candidate Senator Elizabeth Warren said this last March.
“Every vote matters, and the way we can make that happen is that we can have national voting, and that means get rid of the Electoral College.”
Negative change in our government began when states with voters from one party began to dominate everything which happens in those states. Democracy was placed aside. In California, it is unfair that Democrats decide the future of the largest and richest state in the Union. Every Republican candidate refuses to campaign in most parts of the Golden State. The opposite is true in Georgia. Republican voters make decisions for everyone in the Peach State. Democratic presidential candidates refuse to waste time and money in this very red state.
The intention of our founding fathers was that the people should choose their president. Today millions of voters refuse to vote in presidential elections for the single fact that they know their votes will not count because of the Electoral College.
I demand that my vote counts, and so should you. This is simply common sense.
Tell everyone; “the truth lives here.”
