by James Turnage, author of “Sheena, Queen of the Streets”
The people of Washington D.C. have long sought statehood. Today, Nancy Pelosi became the 218th member of the House to support statehood for the District of Colombia.
The argument has long been that our nation’s capital must remain an independent area, free from the restraints mandated by state regulations. A new agreement which would designate a small portion of D.C. as the capital could end objections which would allow D.C. to become our 51st state.
The new state would have two senators and only one or possibly two members in the House. Republicans will lobby against statehood. D.C. is predominately Democratic and two more Democrats in the senate would change the balance in Washington, which is now favorable for Republicans.
D. C.’s population is approximately 700,000 people; more than Vermont and Wyoming. It is projected to reach one-million within a few decades.
The truth is the only consideration should be the residents of D.C. Should they have the same rights; the same ability to control what happens in their area of the nation as California, or Alabama? Should they have representation in the House and Senate offered to other Americans?
This is not similar to the efforts of Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico is split on statehood; D.C. is not.
All Americans should share the same rights. It would be advantageous for our country to allow 700,000 people to take pride and experience the advantages of being citizens of a state.
Republicans will fight this, but only for political reasons; this is another crime against the American people perpetrated by the enemy of all true patriots.
“The truth lives here;” spread the word.
