Today was a sad day for America. Only three times in our history has a sitting president been impeached in the House. Richard Nixon resigned before the proceedings were complete. For hours members of the House stepped up to the podium and either denounced Trump’s Constitutional violations or attempted to defend their criminal-in-chief.
Democrats upheld the law and were somber while performing their obligation to the Law of the Land and to the American people. Republicans were cavalier pretending that Trump did not commit a crime while refusing to keep their oath of office.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi was opposed to the impeachment of Trump until she could no longer ignore the many ‘high crimes and misdemeanors’ committed by the worst president in American history. Simply put, she was forced to do the right thing and uphold the law.
Although Trump was charged with only two counts, the list of possible violations was long and convincing. No American wanted this to happen, but the only blame belongs to the current Republican Party in name only. They could have removed Trump from office in 2017 by invoking the 25th amendment. Trump has proven time and time again that he is a malignant narcissist. He is unfit to be the leader of the most powerful nation in the world.
There was some humor in today’s proceedings offered by Republican Representative Barry Loudermilk from Georgia. This ignorant redneck had the audacity to compare Trump’s condemnation to that of Jesus Christ. I can’t make this shit up.
- Loudermilk’s commentsdescribed the Biblical story of Jesus’ trial before Pontius Pilate, the fifth governor of Judea, who ultimately ordered Jesus’ crucifixion.
- According to CNN, Loudermilk was criticizing how the whistleblower was never called to testify as part of the impeachment process and that the whistleblower’s identity has been kept secret.
- The White House rejected Democrats’ invitationon December 7 to participate in the impeachment process, with chief counsel Pat Cipollone calling the inquiry “completely baseless” and that House Democrats had violated “due process and fundamental fairness.”
- Trump previously came under heavy firein August for calling himself the “Chosen One” in a series of inflammatory comments about Jews.
For Republicans this was not a serious occasion. I find this very sad. For a sitting president to be impeached, he or she must have committed crimes against his or her own nation. December 18, 2019 will always be remembered as one of the darkest days in American history.
No one, including yours truly, wanted this. However, his cowardly and hypocritical party continued to allow Trump to violate the Constitution without dissent. Our nation’s security and its history was under attack by the least qualified and most corrupt man to ever defile the White House.
Anyone who reads Article two of the Constitution and reviews the impeachment hearings cannot deny that Trump is guilty of much more than the two counts of impeachment filed against him. Today’s Republican Party in name only is not a serious group of men and a few women. They are pretending to ignore the facts and are refusing to admit that Trump is the worst thing to happen to the United States of America in its 243 years. They should be ashamed, but they lack the courage to do the right thing for their country.
