Iowa, New Hampshire, and the Democratic Candidacy in 2020

The Iowa Caucus now appears inconsequential. Today’s New Hampshire Primary remains ‘too close to call,’ although Bernie Sanders appears to be the man to beat. The next event is a caucus in my state of Nevada. What do we know so far? The truth is, nothing.

It remains unclear if Bernie Sanders or Pete Buttigieg won in Iowa, and does it matter? In New Hampshire Bernie Sanders appears to have the lead, but Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar are close behind, followed by Elizabeth Warren.

The only thing we can learn to date is that more Democrats appear to be more progressive than moderate. The only surprise to date is that Elizabeth Warren is not in the first or second position. However, the truth is that until “super Tuesday” on March 3rd, every candidate has an opportunity to become the ‘front runner.’

The biggest loser appears to be Joe Biden. His past positions on racism and sexism have followed him to the primaries. These facts, combined with his age, are detrimental to his efforts. Real Americans want to rid our nation of its current sexual predator. I’m not sure it’s wise to elect a man who disrespected Anita Hill more than two decades past. Has he changed? I doubt it. Although I try every day to be better, parts of me from 20 years ago continue to reappear. I am just a few years younger than Mr. Biden.

I have mixed feelings about the first two events of election year 2020. I am pleased that Bernie won New Hampshire and is likely the winner in Iowa; (we many never know for sure). I share Bernie’s view of our nation’s future, but I believe America needs real change. History has proven that old, white men will not create change and move us forward into the 21st century.

Trump has proven that old, white, backward thinking men are detrimental to our nation’s future and do not represent a nation which averages 38.1 years of age. America also remains dominated by women, 51-49 percent. My first choice in 2020 was Kamala Harris, and I now support Elizabeth Warren. Both are strong women who have a progressive agenda and deserve my respect. The reason for my first choice was a combination of age, and the fact that Senator Harris is of mixed race. Our country is becoming more diverse and more beautiful every day and they need more representation in Washington.

However, I will eagerly support the Democratic candidate who receives her or his party’s nomination. It’s time for America to make sense again. The people deserve an American president who will represent all 330 million people, not just a few.

This election is about much more than ridding our nation of the worst illegitimate president in history; it’s about the issues Trump has failed to address over the last three long years.

He continues attempts to destroy Obamacare and remove medical care from tens-of-millions of Americans. We need universal healthcare which works for everyone. Trump and his party lack the ability to create such a law.

Education has reached a critical point in America. Every year our country loses some of its greatest minds simply because they cannot afford to attend our colleges and universities.

The opioid crisis continues. Nearly 60,000 Americans lose their lives each year from a drug overdose related to opioid addiction.

Sensible immigration reform has become a crisis. Placing men, women, and children seeking amnesty in concentration camps is not a solution, it exacerbates the problem. Not to mention it is a crime against humanity reminiscent of 1930’s Germany.

Income inequality has grown wider under Trump. Not a single ‘good-paying’ job has been created by Trump’s failed administration. One statistic reveals the single group of Americans supported by Trump. In 2017 there were 560 billionaires and 10.1 million millionaires in America. Three years later there are 704 billionaires and 18.6 million millionaires.

I may stand alone but I believe we deserve a president who works and serves all America’s people. If Trump wants to golf, and party at Mar-a-Lago all the time, we should let him. Let’s permanently retire the perverted, obese, old man on November 3rd. This country is ours, not his.
