Former vice-president Joe Biden played his “hole card” on Sunday, claiming that he will choose a woman as his running mate. But, who will this woman be?
Biden will be 78 just weeks after the November election. If Biden wins the nomination and becomes our 46th president, he will be 82 at the end of his first term. Would he run for a second, or would he support his vice-president?
Beginning in 2017 I supported Kamala Harris for the 2020 Democratic nomination. I was very disappointed when she dropped out of the contest. She would be a great addition to the Democratic ticket. First, America is in need of woman to lead our nation, and she would be first in line if Biden could not finish his term. Second, she will be 56 on election day: much closer to the America’s average age of 38.1. She is a progressive, and extremely intelligent. Last, and of equal importance to America in the 21st century, she is a member of our diverse population which is growing rapidly.
Other names have been mentioned including Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar, Kirsten Gillibrand, and Stacey Abrams. Other possibilities include Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, and Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo.
For Biden to win the November 3rd election, he must find a way to encourage millennial and women voters to go to the polls in large numbers. Women compose 51 percent of our population and millennials are the largest voting bloc.
Biden has a problem with both groups. In 1991 his disrespectful treatment of Anita Hill during Clarence Thomas’ confirmation hearings for the Supreme Court have not been forgotten. Biden calls himself a moderate. If this was 1990, his policies would make him a Republican. Millennials tend to be more progressive/liberal than older voters. They support Bernie Sanders’ policies of free education, Medicare for all, and fair taxation for the wealthy and their corporations.
His running mate must support the needs of these two groups with a focus on people instead of profit.
If Biden’s campaign staff points him in the right direction, he will crush Trump in November. If not, we could be forced to suffer under Trump’s anti-American ambitions for four more years.
